The gridlock, which stretched for several kilometres, left hundreds of motorists, commuters and commercial drivers stranded for hours, with many spending the night on the road. The congestion was reportedly triggered by a combination of heavy vehicular traffic, broken-down trucks, road narrowings and ongoing repair work along sections of the highway.
In response, officials of the Kogi State Government deployed traffic management personnel and emergency responders to critical points along the route, while FRSC operatives were mobilised to control traffic flow and remove stalled vehicles. Security agencies, including the military, were also drafted in to maintain order, prevent breakdown of law and order, and assist in coordinating the movement of vehicles.
Eyewitnesses said efforts were focused on clearing abandoned and faulty trucks, redirecting traffic where possible and creating alternative routes to decongest the highway. Long queues of articulated vehicles and commercial buses were gradually broken up as security operatives worked through the night and into Saturday.
Authorities appealed to motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials, while advising road users to avoid night travel and consider alternative routes until normal traffic flow is fully restored. They also warned truck drivers against indiscriminate parking and operating vehicles that are not roadworthy.
As of the latest update, traffic movement had begun to improve in some sections, although congestion persisted in others, with officials assuring the public that sustained efforts were ongoing to completely resolve the situation.
