The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the recent attempted coup in Benin Republic, describing it as a direct attack on democratic governance in the region.
In a statement, the regional body reaffirmed its “zero tolerance” stance on unconstitutional changes of government and warned that it is prepared to activate and deploy its standby force if necessary to restore order and protect Benin’s constitutional system.
ECOWAS called on all stakeholders in Benin to respect the rule of law, maintain peace, and support the country’s democratically elected authorities. The bloc also vowed to continue monitoring the situation closely while working with international partners to prevent further instability in the region.
