The Presidency has appealed to Nigerians to help monitor and report any breaches of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive ordering the withdrawal of police escorts from Very Important Persons (VIPs).
President Tinubu had mandated that police personnel attached to private individuals and VIPs be redeployed to core policing duties nationwide. Following the order, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, announced on Thursday that 11,566 officers previously assigned as escorts had been withdrawn across the country.
Speaking during an interview on TVC on Sunday, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Daniel Bwala, reiterated the administration’s resolve to ensure full compliance and encouraged citizens to document any violations.
“If you identify a celebrity, a private individual, or anyone using police personnel in defiance of the president’s directive, capture evidence—whether in photos or videos—as much as you can,” Bwala said.
He clarified that the directive does not strip all government officials of police protection, noting that certain key officials still require security cover due to the nature of their roles.
“The president’s directive is not absolute. There are critical government figures who will still have one form of security or another,” he explained.
Bwala added that while police escorts are being withdrawn, other security agencies—including the State Security Service (SSS) and the Civil Defence Corps—may be assigned to provide protection where necessary.
“It could be SSS or Civil Defence that will be there to support you, but police have no business being with you,” he emphasized.
