The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has confirmed that two Nigerians have been rescued, while two others lost their lives following a tragic shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea.According to the agency, the incident occurred when a vessel carrying 49 migrants capsized while attempting the perilous journey from North Africa to Europe. Rescue operations were launched immediately after authorities received distress signals from the sinking boat.“Out of the 49 people on board, 47 were rescued, while two bodies — both identified as Nigerians — were recovered,” the IOM said in a statement.

“Two other Nigerians were among the survivors and are currently receiving medical care.”

The organisation noted that the migrants were part of a group that had departed from the Libyan coast, one of the most frequently used — and deadliest — migration routes in the world.The IOM reiterated its concern over the increasing number of deaths and disappearances along the Central Mediterranean route, urging governments to strengthen search-and-rescue operations and create safer migration pathways.According to the agency’s Missing Migrants Project, more than 2,500 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean so far in 2025 — one of the highest figures recorded in recent years.
