The Russian government has said it is closely observing the situation in Nigeria after U.S. President Donald Trump made remarks hinting at possible American military intervention in the West African nation.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over what it described as “escalatory rhetoric” from Washington, stressing that any foreign military action without United Nations authorization would violate international law.
“Russia is monitoring the situation in Nigeria with keen attention. We urge all parties to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue rather than threats of force,” the statement read.
The ministry further reaffirmed Moscow’s support for Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, adding that Russia remains ready to assist in fostering regional stability through diplomatic means.President Trump had earlier suggested that the U.S. could take “decisive military steps” if Nigeria’s government fails to “curb growing instability and human rights abuses,” a comment that has drawn mixed reactions globally.
Nigeria’s government has not yet officially responded to either the U.S. president’s statement or Russia’s position. However, diplomatic sources in Abuja say consultations are ongoing as tension continues to rise over Washington’s warning.
