U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of all trade negotiations with Canada, following a dispute over what he described as a “fake” advertisement misrepresenting former President Ronald Reagan.
Trump, in a statement on Thursday, accused Canada of using a misleading Reagan quote in a campaign opposing U.S. tariffs.
He said the move was “dishonest and disrespectful,” adding that his administration would not continue discussions until the matter was addressed.
The decision marks a sharp escalation in tensions between the two longtime allies, who have been at odds over tariff policies and trade reforms in recent months. Canadian officials have not yet responded to Trump’s remarks.
