A student of Taraba State University, Endurance Achikare Igbagri, has issued a heartfelt public apology to the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, the Christian community, and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) following the backlash that trailed her choice of costume during the institution’s recent Costume Day celebration.
Photos and videos from the event, which went viral on social media, showed several students wearing different themed attires. However, Ms. Igbagri’s outfit — which resembled that of a Catholic Rev. Sister (nun) — sparked widespread criticism, particularly from members of the Catholic Church who considered it disrespectful and offensive to their faith.
In response to the controversy, the student released a written apology addressed to the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Jalingo, Reverend Fathers, Catholic faithful, and CAN officials, acknowledging that her actions were deeply inappropriate and insensitive.
She admitted that wearing such attire was a grave mistake made out of ignorance and lack of proper understanding of its religious significance, stressing that she never intended to mock or ridicule the Church or its sacred institutions.
In her words, she described her behavior as “deeply thoughtless, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable,” expressing sincere remorse for any pain or offense her actions may have caused to the Christian community.
The management of Taraba State University has not released an official statement regarding the incident, but sources within the campus say the apology was made voluntarily after the student realized the gravity of her actions and the extent of public reaction.
The controversy has since reignited discussions on the need for cultural and religious sensitivity in student social events and costume celebrations across tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
