The Delta State Police Command has arrested one of its officers involved in the shooting of an unarmed citizen’s vehicle in Asaba.

The arrest follows a viral video showing the officer attempting to forcefully stop a moving vehicle whose driver had allegedly refused to halt after a hit-and-run incident.

In an official statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest, describing the officer’s conduct as “highly unprofessional.” He emphasized that no police officer is permitted to discharge a firearm without adhering to the Force Order 237, which governs the use of firearms by law enforcement officers.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered immediate internal disciplinary proceedings against the erring officer, despite claims that he was responding to a hit-and-run case.

CP Abaniwonda further assured the public that the officer would face appropriate sanctions as provided in the Police Act and regulations, stressing that such misconduct will not be tolerated in the command. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Delta Police Command to maintaining professionalism and public trust in law enforcement operations.
