A Nigerian lady has sparked a heated conversation online after questioning the growing trend among married women who prefer to use their siblings, especially their brothers, as their next of kin instead of their husbands.
In a viral video circulating on social media, the lady expressed her confusion and disappointment over what she described as a worrying lack of trust within marriages today. She noted that, in most cases, men have no hesitation in listing their wives as their next of kin — whether when purchasing property, opening bank accounts, or completing official documents — but a significant number of women don’t reciprocate the gesture.
She said, “Out of a hundred men, about ninety-eight usually put their wives as their next of kin. But when it’s time for the women to fill in theirs, they go ahead and write their younger brother’s name. I thought it was normal at first until I realized it’s becoming a pattern. You’re married, your husband uses you as his next of kin, but when it’s your turn, you use your sibling. Why?”
The lady went on to challenge the mindset behind this choice, suggesting that many women enter marriage with fear or suspicion instead of trust. According to her, marriage should be a partnership where both individuals support and trust each other, not a silent competition or a union filled with hidden motives.
She questioned, “Why go into marriage if you’re already preparing for the worst? Marriage is supposed to be teamwork, not a battlefield. If you’re constantly calculating and doubting your partner, what kind of foundation are you building?”
The woman further expressed shock over how some women allegedly deceive their husbands during property transactions. She claimed that a few women intentionally inflate the price of land or houses their husbands plan to buy, just to secretly keep the difference.
“Some of you will go to a real estate company to help your husband buy land. If the land is ₦6 million, you’ll tell him it’s ₦8 million and pocket ₦2 million. Why? It’s not like the man is even treating you badly,” she said.
While acknowledging that not all marriages are perfect, she advised women not to let past experiences or societal fears push them into deceitful behavior. She emphasized that even in difficult marriages, honesty and fairness should remain non-negotiable.
She concluded by urging both men and women to build their marriages on trust and mutual respect, reminding viewers that genuine love shows itself not only in affection but also in financial transparency and loyalty.
