Nigerians light up New York with vibrant Independence Day parade

Nigerians in the United States brought the streets of New York to life on Saturday as they marked the 2025 Nigeria Independence Day Parade and Carnival with dazzling displays of culture, music, and pride.Dressed in colourful traditional attire and waving green-and-white flags, participants marched through Manhattan, showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage through energetic dances, elaborate costumes, and live performances.

The event, which drew crowds of Nigerians and friends of the country from across the U.S., featured floats representing different states and cultural groups, as well as Afrobeat performances, masquerades, and food vendors serving local delicacies.Organisers said the parade was not only a celebration of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary but also a show of unity and resilience among Nigerians in the diaspora.

“This is our way of honouring our roots and reminding the world of Nigeria’s beauty and strength,” one participant said.The annual parade, one of the largest African cultural events in the U.S., once again turned New York into a vibrant hub of African pride and celebration.
