UNICEF Calls for Urgent Action to End Female Genital Mutilation in NigeriaThe United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has renewed calls for urgent and collective efforts to eliminate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in Nigeria, describing the practice as a serious violation of the rights of women and girls.
UNICEF stressed that millions of women and girls continue to suffer the harmful consequences of FGM, which has no medical benefits and often leads to long-term physical and psychological complications.
The organisation urged governments, community leaders, civil society, and families to intensify advocacy and take concrete steps toward ending the practice, particularly in states where it remains prevalent.According to UNICEF, eliminating FGM is critical to safeguarding the health, dignity, and human rights of Nigerian girls and women.
