President Bola Tinubu has reportedly ended the six-month emergency rule in Rivers State, a move that will allow for the return of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and the 32-member House of Assembly on September 18, 2025.
Following a private meeting with the state’s sole administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas, President Tinubu instructed him to prepare a detailed handover note.
This document is expected to provide a full account of all financial activity during his tenure, including inherited funds, accrued revenues, and expenditures, with specific information on how money was allocated to various projects.
This directive from the President effectively halts a last-minute effort by some factions in the National Assembly to extend the emergency rule until December. These groups had argued that an extension was necessary for Ibas to finish ongoing projects, such as the reconstruction of the House of Assembly Complex and a workers’ verification exercise.
Notably, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is said to be against extending the emergency rule and supports the immediate restoration of democratic institutions.
Governor Fubara, who is currently in London, is anticipated to return soon and will reportedly be given a list of political appointees to form his new administration.
