The Delta State Government has stepped in to address the terrible condition of a major stretch of the Warri-Sapele-Benin Road, awarding a reconstruction contract to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).
The project, which was put out for bids by the State Tenders Board, covers a 10-kilometer section of the road—five kilometers in each direction—from the Spare Parts Market U-Turn in Effurun to just after Ohore Junction, before Omenta Bridge. This section spans the Uvwie and Okpe Local Government Areas.
The project is estimated to cost ₦35 billion and is scheduled to be completed in 12 months. The reconstruction will expand the road to a width of 11.6 meters and will include 2.8-meter shoulders. The contract also includes the construction of 12 kilometers of stormwater drains, a reinforced concrete pavement, and a durable wearing course.
Although the Warri-Sapele-Benin Road is a federal road, years of neglect, gridlock, and frequent accidents have made it a major problem for both commuters and businesses. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, through its MORE Agenda, has prioritized urban development and infrastructure renewal, and this intervention is a testament to that commitment.
The reconstruction is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and boost economic activity along one of the busiest routes in Delta State. By partnering with CCECC, a company known for its large-scale road projects, the government aims to ensure the project is completed with high quality and durability. This effort shows the governor’s dedication to providing infrastructure that supports growth and prosperity, even on roads that aren’t under state control.
