Former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again criticized excessive government spending, advocating for greater fiscal responsibility and accountability from public officials.
Speaking at a recent event, Obi shared a personal decision from his time as governor of Anambra State: he abolished the Office of the First Lady. He explained this move was principled and aimed at reducing the cost of governance.
“We had an Office of the First Lady — it was getting more money than some of our ministries,” Obi revealed. “I shut it down because nobody voted for my wife. It is me they voted for. And both of us live in the house. I love her, she is my best friend. I shut them down so that will cut cost of governance.
Obi, known for his commitment to frugal governance, highlighted the inconsistency of leaders enjoying lavish lifestyles while asking citizens to make sacrifices. He succinctly stated, “You can’t be feasting while telling people to fast.”
