In a significant moment for regional diplomacy, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today officially handed over the chairmanship of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone. The transition took place during the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, held in Abuja.
This marks a pivotal moment for the regional bloc as it continues to navigate complex political, economic, and security challenges.
President Tinubu’s tenure, which began in July 2023, was characterized by a resolute focus on strengthening democratic institutions, fostering economic integration, and addressing the persistent issue of insecurity within the sub-region. During his leadership, ECOWAS grappled with several coups and attempted coups in member states, to which President Tinubu responded with a firm stance on constitutional rule and a commitment to peaceful resolution. His leadership saw renewed efforts to revitalize the ECOWAS Standby Force and enhance regional counter-terrorism initiatives.
In his valedictory speech, President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support he received from his fellow heads of state and acknowledged the considerable challenges that still lie ahead for the region. He reiterated Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to the ideals and objectives of ECOWAS and pledged continued support to the new leadership. “The journey towards a more integrated, prosperous, and secure West Africa is a collective one,” President Tinubu stated, emphasizing the need for continued unity and collaboration among member nations.
