The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Ebonyi State, Chinedu Uburu, has revealed a startling discovery: deceased workers are still receiving salaries.
During a visit by the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Uburu explained that this issue came to light during an ongoing verification process at local government areas.
He expressed concern about the financial strain on local governments due to the increased minimum wage, making salary payments difficult.
Uburu appealed for patience from workers awaiting payment, emphasizing that the verification exercise is intended to help, not target, employees.
He also praised the NUJ for its professionalism.
The NUJ Chairman, Samson Nwafor, assured ALGON of the union’s support for development efforts and emphasized the media’s role in serving the public interest, stating that journalism is about supporting the government and contributing to the betterment of the state.
