The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is mourning the loss of officer Aminu Sahabi Salisu, who was tragically killed by a suspected internet fraudster, Joshua Chukwubueze Ikechukwu, during a law enforcement operation in Anambra State.
In a statement released on Sunday, January 19th, the EFCC expressed deep concern over the irresponsible and callous narratives circulating on social media regarding the incident.
The Commission strongly condemned these portrayals, deeming them a gross misrepresentation of the facts and an insult to the memory of their fallen officer.
The EFCC emphasized that there is absolutely no justification for the criminal act and expressed dismay at the online commentators who appear to sympathize with the alleged murderer.
The incident occurred during a lawful operation to apprehend suspected internet fraudsters at a residence in Ifite, Awka. While 37 suspects were successfully arrested, Ikechukwu, despite being aware of the officers’ presence, refused to cooperate and opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Salisu and injuring another officer.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Ikechukwu was involved in online activities of questionable legality, including coding and the sale of medical supplies.
Law enforcement recovered several electronic devices from his residence, including laptops, iPads, and recording devices.
