Former Vice President, , has called for the immediate suspension of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) refinery rehabilitation agreement involving Chinese firms for the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.
Atiku described the deal as a โdangerous gambleโ with Nigeriaโs energy future, raising concerns about the technical competence, financial transparency, and long-term implications of the agreement.
According to him, the Federal Government must provide Nigerians with full details of the arrangement, including the identities, track records, and financial obligations tied to the Chinese companies handling the projects.
The former presidential candidate questioned why the country continues to rely on foreign partnerships despite billions of naira already spent on refinery rehabilitation over the years with little visible progress.
He warned that entering another major refinery deal without proper scrutiny could worsen Nigeriaโs economic challenges and deepen public distrust in the management of the oil sector.
Atiku also urged the National Assembly, anti-corruption agencies, and civil society groups to closely monitor the transaction to ensure accountability and protect national interests.
The NNPC had earlier announced plans involving Chinese firms as part of efforts to revamp operations at the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries to boost local refining capacity and reduce fuel import dependence.
