A 63-year-old Lagos pastor, Chris Douglas, the General Overseer of Peculiar Generation Assembly Church in Oshodi, has been convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for raping the daughter of one of his church members.
Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja delivered the judgment on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The court found Douglas guilty on three counts of rape. He was discharged and acquitted on six other counts bordering on defilement and sexual assault.
Details of the Case
The offenses spanned several occasions, with the first incident reported in September 2017. The victim, the daughter of a church member, was a teenager (around 17 years old) at the time the abuse began. She testified that Douglas drugged and raped her on multiple occasions, including at a hotel and other locations.
The victim viewed Douglas as a trusted spiritual father figure. In her testimony, she stated: “I trusted him like a spiritual father. I never imagined he could do this to me.”
Her mother later confronted the pastor at the church after noticing her daughter’s distress. According to accounts, Douglas reportedly cried, attributed the acts to “the work of the devil,” and begged for forgiveness in the presence of church elders. The matter was eventually reported to a human rights organisation, the police at Makinde Division, and the Mirabel Centre, where the victim received medical examination and support.
Evidence and Trial
The prosecution, led by the Director of Public Prosecutions, called five witnesses, including the victim, her mother, and a medical doctor. Medical evidence and other documents were presented to the court. The victim suffered severe psychological trauma, including depression and suicidal thoughts, as a result of the repeated abuse.
Douglas denied the allegations, claiming any interaction was consensual. However, Justice Oshodi rejected this defense, ruling that the prosecution proved rape beyond reasonable doubt. The judge highlighted the significant power imbalance and the victim’s age and vulnerability at the time of the incidents, noting that consent could not be valid in such circumstances.
While some earlier allegations were not fully established for certain charges, the court confirmed guilt on the three counts of rape for incidents after the victim turned 18.
Judge’s Reasoning and Sentence
Justice Oshodi described the pastor’s actions as a “gross breach of trust.” He emphasized that Douglas occupied a position of spiritual authority and was regarded as a father figure by the victim and her family, yet he exploited and betrayed that trust instead of protecting it.
“The law must protect the vulnerable, and this court will not hesitate to punish abuse of trust in the strongest terms,” the judge stated.
Douglas was sentenced to life imprisonment on each of the three counts of rape, with the sentences to run concurrently. The court also ordered that his name be entered into the Lagos State Sexual Offenders Register.
