Thirteen commercial sex workers, including 12 Nigerian women and one Ghanaian woman, have been arrested during a special police operation targeting prostitution and human trafficking in Koforidua in Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The operation, carried out by the New Juaben South Municipal Police Command on Monday, February 10, 2026, also led to the arrest of two additional suspects — a landlord and a bouncer — who are alleged to have facilitated the illegal activities.
According to the Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Ransford Nsiah, the action followed a complaint filed on Thursday, February 6, 2026, by a 30-year-old Nigerian national, Stella Godwill, who is identified as a commercial sex worker residing at Nsukwao in Koforidua.
Godwill reported to police that she had been trafficked from Nigeria to Ghana by her alleged madam, Christabel Simon Monday, also a Nigerian national, for the purpose of prostitution.
She told investigators that she was required to generate a daily income target of 400 Ghana cedis from sex work. On the day of the incident, she was only able to raise 250 Ghana cedis, which her alleged trafficker and the trafficker’s boyfriend, Simon Kwarteng, reportedly refused to accept.
The complainant further alleged that she was physically assaulted by the two suspects for failing to meet the daily target.
Following the report, police launched investigations and proceeded to Dabiasem, a suburb of New Juaben, where Christabel Simon Monday was arrested.
Further investigations uncovered a brothel operating in the same area, leading to the arrest of 12 additional suspects. Police said condoms were recovered during the operation.
The suspects, aged between 15 and 31, are believed to have violated Sections 273, 274, and 277 of Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), which criminalize prostitution, human trafficking, and the operation of brothels.
Superintendent Nsiah confirmed that all suspects are currently in police custody. The minor among them has been separated from the adults for protection.
