The Anambra State Government has suspended nine public primary school headteachers for two weeks following poor pupil turnout during school hours, allegedly linked to the continued observance of sit-at-home orders in parts of the state.
According to the state’s education authorities, the affected headteachers were found to have failed in enforcing full resumption in their schools, despite the government’s directive that academic activities should continue normally. The suspension, which takes immediate effect, is meant to serve as a deterrent to school administrators who allow learning to be disrupted.
Officials said monitoring teams discovered that several schools recorded very low attendance, with some pupils staying away entirely, even on days when no official sit-at-home order was declared by the state. The government described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that children’s right to education must not be compromised.
Reacting to the development, the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) warned that further sanctions would be meted out to teachers, headteachers, or education managers who encourage or tolerate absenteeism. Parents were also urged to ensure their children attend school regularly, assuring them that adequate security measures are in place.
The state government reiterated its commitment to restoring normalcy across Anambra, emphasizing that fear-driven closures and unofficial sit-at-home compliance would not be allowed to derail education or other essential services.
Authorities added that monitoring of schools will continue statewide to ensure full compliance with government directives and to safeguard the academic future of Anambra pupils.
