News

A high-capacity commercial bus was engulfed in flames on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos on Tuesday, causing severe traffic congestion and disrupting movement across one of the city’s busiest transport routes.

The incident occurred during peak hours, triggering panic among motorists and commuters. Eyewitnesses said the bus caught fire while in motion, forcing the driver to stop abruptly as passengers and nearby road users scrambled to safety. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, as all occupants were able to escape before the fire spread.

Firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service were quickly deployed to the scene and worked to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to other vehicles. Security personnel also cordoned off the affected section of the bridge to allow emergency responders to operate effectively.

As a result of the incident, traffic on the bridge slowed to a standstill for several hours, with vehicles stretching far into adjoining routes. Commuters heading towards the mainland and island experienced long delays, while traffic management officials were seen directing motorists and advising alternative routes.

The cause of the fire has not yet been officially confirmed, but preliminary reports suggest a possible mechanical fault. Authorities have since removed the burnt vehicle from the roadway and restored normal traffic flow.Officials have urged vehicle owners, particularly commercial operators, to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles to prevent similar incidents in the future.
