A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Stephen, the Parish Priest of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Boji-Boji Agbor, in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, has reportedly died after slumping while delivering a homily during Mass.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday during a church service attended by parishioners, who were thrown into shock and confusion as the priest suddenly collapsed at the altar while preaching.Eyewitnesses said Rev. Fr. Stephen was in the middle of his sermon when he appeared to falter and slumped. Members of the congregation, including fellow priests and medical personnel present at the Mass, reportedly rushed to his aid.
He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention but was later confirmed dead by doctors.Although the exact cause of death has not yet been officially disclosed, sources said the priest had complained of feeling unwell earlier before the Mass but insisted on proceeding with the service.
The incident has plunged the Catholic community in Agbor and the wider Delta State into mourning, with parishioners describing the late priest as a dedicated, humble, and selfless servant of God who was committed to pastoral work and community development.Following the incident, church authorities reportedly suspended the Mass, while prayers were offered for the repose of the priest’s soul.
