Insecurity: Cleric Warns Against Calls for Civilian Firearms

News

A Lagos-based cleric has cautioned Nigerians against the growing calls for civilians to be allowed to carry firearms, arguing that such a move could worsen the country’s already fragile security situation.

Speaking during a community forum on public safety, the cleric noted that while frustration over rising insecurity is understandable, arming citizens is not a sustainable or safe solution. According to him, widespread access to guns could lead to misuse, accidental shootings, and an increase in violent crime.

He warned that many citizens lack the training, discipline, and psychological readiness required to handle weapons responsibly. Allowing firearms, he said, may create more problems than it attempts to solve, especially in a society already grappling with tension, economic stress, and social conflicts.

The cleric urged the government to instead strengthen law enforcement agencies, improve intelligence gathering, and address the root causes of insecurity. He also appealed to religious leaders, community heads, and citizens to collaborate in promoting peace, vigilance, and early reporting of suspicious activities.
