The African Union (AU) has announced the immediate suspension of Guinea-Bissau from all its activities and decision-making bodies following a military coup that disrupted constitutional order in the country.
In a statement released on Friday, the AU condemned the actions of the mutinous soldiers, describing the takeover as an unacceptable assault on democratic governance. The continental body called for the swift restoration of civilian authority and urged all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue and stability.
The suspension has been welcomed by ECOWAS, which earlier issued a strong rebuke of the coup and reaffirmed its “zero-tolerance” policy for unconstitutional changes of government within the West African region. Other international observer missions have also backed the AU’s decision, emphasizing the need to protect democratic institutions across the continent.
Meanwhile, concerns continue to rise over the political situation in Guinea-Bissau, with reports of heightened military presence in key government buildings and uncertainty about the status of several senior officials. Regional leaders have called for calm as diplomatic efforts intensify to resolve the crisis.
