The Federal Government has announced a major reform in the admission requirements for tertiary institutions across Nigeria, making Mathematics no longer compulsory for students seeking admission into Arts and Humanities programmes.The new policy, approved as part of a comprehensive review of the national admission framework, aims to create a more flexible and inclusive system that widens access to higher education.
According to the Ministry of Education, the reform recognizes the unique learning needs of different disciplines and seeks to remove unnecessary barriers that have, for years, limited the academic aspirations of many students.Officials said the move aligns with global best practices and is designed to ensure that entry requirements reflect the core competencies relevant to each field of study.While Mathematics will remain mandatory for Science, Technology, Engineering, and certain Social Science courses, it will no longer be a prerequisite for subjects like Law, Languages, Mass Communication, Theatre Arts, and related programmes.
The government said the new policy will take effect from the next admission cycle, with universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education expected to update their entry criteria accordingly.
