Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has announced plans to lead a protest on October 20 in Abuja, calling for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, is expected to take place at strategic locations across the Federal Capital Territory.
Sowore, who made the announcement on his social media pages, urged Nigerians to join the march, describing Kanu’s continued detention despite multiple court orders for his release as “a gross violation of human rights and disregard for the rule of law.”He emphasized that the peaceful demonstration would also draw attention to broader issues of injustice and political repression in the country.
Kanu has been in detention since 2021, facing charges bordering on treasonable felony. Despite several rulings granting him bail, the Department of State Services (DSS) has continued to hold him in custody, sparking nationwide calls for his release.
