Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has revealed that more than 3,000 residents have been displaced and over 57,000 others affected by flooding across the state between January and October 2025.Speaking during a press briefing on the state’s flood management efforts, the governor described the situation as alarming, noting that the government had intensified measures to mitigate the impact of the floods on vulnerable communities.
Sanwo-Olu explained that the state government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, had been carrying out continuous drainage clearing, dredging of major canals, and construction of flood barriers to reduce water overflow in high-risk areas.He further disclosed that temporary shelters and relief materials have been provided for displaced persons in affected local government areas, including Ikorodu, Alimosho, and Eti-Osa.The governor urged residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainages and water channels, warning that such practices worsen flooding and destroy infrastructure.
“Lagos is a coastal city, and we cannot completely eliminate flooding, but we can reduce its impact through collective responsibility and strict environmental compliance,” Sanwo-Olu said.He assured that the state government remains committed to protecting lives and property, while continuing long-term solutions to manage the effects of climate change and rising sea levels.
