The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, has called for improved salaries and better welfare packages for staff of the electoral body.
Amupitan said INEC workers are among the least-paid employees in Nigeria, stressing that better remuneration is necessary if the commission expects its personnel to remain accountable and committed to their duties.
“If we want to hold INEC accountable, give staff a living wage,” the INEC chairman said.
He disclosed that the commission has introduced a separate salary structure for its workers as part of efforts to improve staff welfare and working conditions.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at motivating INEC personnel and strengthening accountability within the commission as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan emphasized that improving staff welfare is an important part of building a stronger and more credible electoral system.
