Armed bandits have attacked Government Secondary School (GSS) Opada-Olowa in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, abducting the school principal, a National Examinations Council (NECO) ad hoc staff member, and four students while examinations were in progress.
The attack occurred at about 5:25 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, causing panic as the gunmen stormed the school and fired shots, forcing students and residents to flee.
Following the incident, a joint team of security operatives launched a search-and-rescue operation. One of the abducted students has since been rescued, while efforts continue to secure the release of the remaining victims.
Security personnel have intensified bush-combing operations, intelligence gathering, and surveillance across the area to track down the kidnappers and rescue those still being held.
A community leader, Sunday Alkali, said residents were relaxing nearby when the gunmen first appeared.
According to him, the attackers seemed surprised to see many people outside and briefly withdrew before returning and shooting indiscriminately, causing everyone to run for safety.
Residents said they only realized the school had been attacked after the gunfire stopped. On returning to the premises, they found examination papers scattered across classrooms and the school compound, while students and school officials were nowhere to be found.
The abducted victims were identified as the school principal, Mr. Nyada Daniel, the NECO supervisor, Mr. Solomon Audu, and four students.
Sources also revealed that the kidnappers have contacted some relatives of the victims, demanding ransom for their release, as security agencies continue efforts to rescue those still in captivity.
