A Niger Delta advocacy group has called on Nigeria’s anti-corruption agencies to investigate the $1.5 billion reportedly spent on the rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt Refinery, citing concerns over the facility’s continued inability to operate at full capacity.
The group questioned the transparency surrounding the massive investment, arguing that despite repeated assurances from authorities that the refinery had resumed operations, Nigerians have yet to see any significant improvement in local refining or fuel supply.
According to the group, the huge amount allocated for the rehabilitation should have delivered measurable results, including increased refining capacity and reduced dependence on imported petroleum products. They described the current state of the refinery as unacceptable and called for a thorough audit of how the funds were utilized.
The group urged agencies such as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch an independent investigation into the rehabilitation project. They also demanded that anyone found culpable of mismanaging or diverting public funds be held accountable.
The Port Harcourt Refinery has undergone several rehabilitation efforts over the years, with the latest $1.5 billion project expected to restore its operational capacity. However, concerns continue to mount over the refinery’s performance, prompting renewed calls for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources.
