Political activist and former Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the creation of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as part of a strategy to attract former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Speaking during an interview on TVC, Okonkwo claimed that the NDC was formed to lure Obi away from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where opposition figures have recently been exploring political alliances ahead of future elections.
According to Okonkwo, the emergence of the NDC and the movement of some politicians from the ADC to the new platform shortly before the nomination deadline have raised concerns about their intentions. He alleged that those who left the ADC for the NDC at that stage should be viewed with suspicion, suggesting they may have been acting as surrogates for the ruling APC.
Okonkwo further argued that the development was part of a broader political strategy aimed at weakening opposition unity. In a remark that has attracted attention, he also claimed that Peter Obi could be drawn to the new platform because he “likes free things.”
As of the time of this report, neither the APC, the NDC, nor Peter Obi had publicly responded to the allegations.
The statements remain allegations made by Kenneth Okonkwo during the interview and have not been independently verified.
