Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a suspected member of the Eiye Confraternity, Oghenebuba Mamatime, for allegedly shooting a former cult member who renounced his membership in Jesse, Delta State.
The spokesperson for the command, Bright Edafe, said the suspect was arrested on July 21, 2026, during a joint operation carried out by police officers and youths from the Jesse community. He added that Mamatime had already been on the police watch list over his alleged involvement in cult-related activities.
According to Edafe, the arrest followed a report by the victim, who alleged that he was shot by the suspect on July 2, 2026, along Ujomi Road in Jesse after deciding to leave the cult group.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect was unhappy with the victim’s decision to renounce cultism and allegedly attempted to force him back into the confraternity. An argument reportedly broke out between the two before the suspect allegedly opened fire on the victim.
During the arrest, officers recovered three locally made pistols and one locally made single-barrel gun from the suspect.
The suspect remains in police custody as the Delta State Police Command continues its investigation into the incident.
