The Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has revealed that the minimum monthly salary for Nigerian soldiers has increased from ₦49,000 to ₦100,000 as part of efforts to improve their welfare.
Speaking during an interview on News Central on Wednesday, July 9, Musa said the government has also improved food rations for troops, although he admitted that the military is still underfunded.
According to him, allegations that soldiers fighting insurgency are poorly fed are false. He referred to a viral video shared by social media critic Justice Crack, claiming the food shown was deliberately altered to create a misleading impression.
The minister also addressed the recent abduction of pupils in Oyo State, describing the incident as unfortunate. He alleged that the kidnappers were trying to pressure the military into releasing some of their detained commanders.
Musa added that the abductors had threatened to kill the children if security forces attempted to rescue them by force, making the situation more delicate.
