The Benue State Police Command has arrested a woman, Mbalumen Ikyenge, over her alleged involvement in a fire that claimed the lives of two young girls in Zaki-Biam, Ukum Local Government Area of the state.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, the incident was reported by the children’s father, Aondoyima Ierkwagh, who alleged that someone deliberately set his house on fire. The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact circumstances and motive behind the incident.

Residents in the area claimed the tragedy may have been linked to a relationship dispute. According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect reportedly visited her boyfriend’s residence on the night of Sunday, July 5, but was asked to leave. She allegedly refused, believing another woman was inside the house.

Witnesses further alleged that the man had put his two daughters, aged four and six, to sleep in a separate round hut before retiring to another hut.

At about midnight, the suspect allegedly set one of the huts on fire, reportedly believing another woman was inside. However, the flames spread to the hut where the two children were sleeping.

Neighbours rushed to rescue the girls and took them to a hospital for treatment, but they later died from severe burn injuries.

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the suspect and says a full investigation is underway to establish the facts surrounding the tragic incident.
