Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch has launched a scathing attack on outgoing UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his surprise resignation, describing him as a “terrible Prime Minister” whose leadership left the country and his party in turmoil.
Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, June 22, after months of mounting pressure from within the Labour Party. In an emotional statement outside Downing Street, he admitted that many within his party no longer believed he was the right person to lead Labour into the next general election and said he was stepping aside in the interests of the country and the party.
Reacting to the announcement, Badenoch said Starmer’s departure was the inevitable result of what she described as failed leadership, poor judgment, and a lack of direction. She argued that the Prime Minister had lost the confidence of both the public and members of his own party long before his resignation.
The Conservative leader has repeatedly criticized Starmer in recent months, previously claiming he was “in office but not in power” as Labour faced internal divisions, ministerial resignations, and growing calls for a change in leadership.
Starmer’s resignation comes less than two years after he led Labour to a historic election victory. However, a series of political setbacks, poor local election results, cabinet resignations, and declining support within the party significantly weakened his position. More than 100 Labour MPs were reportedly calling for him to step down before his decision to resign.
Attention has now shifted to the race to replace Starmer, with Andy Burnham widely seen as the frontrunner to become the next Labour leader and Prime Minister.
Badenoch has called for a fresh political direction, insisting that Britain deserves stronger leadership after what she characterized as a disappointing period under Starmer’s administration.
