Aide to Nyesom Wike Sparks Debate With Comments on Parenting and Northern Insecurity

News Trending

A media aide to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has stirred widespread reactions after attributing rising insecurity in Northern Nigeria to what he described as “irresponsible parenting” and unchecked polygamy.

In a statement that has since gone viral, the aide painted a grim picture of family structures in parts of the North, citing instances where individuals earning as little as ₦60,000 monthly reportedly have multiple wives and as many as 17 children. According to him, such circumstances often make it difficult for parents to adequately provide for their families, leading to neglect and abandonment.

He argued that many of these children, left without proper care, education, or guidance, become vulnerable to recruitment into criminal activities. The aide warned that this growing population of neglected youths could continue to fuel insecurity if urgent social reforms are not implemented.

The comments have ignited intense debate across social media and political circles. While some Nigerians agree with the concerns, stressing the need for family planning and better parental responsibility, others have criticized the remarks as insensitive and an oversimplification of a complex issue.

Critics argue that insecurity in Northern Nigeria is driven by a combination of factors, including poverty, unemployment, weak governance, and longstanding regional challenges, rather than just family structure. They also cautioned against generalizing cultural practices such as polygamy, emphasizing that not all large families contribute to social instability.

Supporters, however, insist that the conversation is necessary, noting that addressing child welfare and parental responsibility should be part of broader strategies to tackle insecurity.

The statement has once again highlighted the deep divisions in public opinion on how best to address Nigeria’s security challenges, with many calling for a more holistic approach that combines economic development, education, and social reorientation.
