Chibok Parents Plead for Rescue of Abducted Schoolgirls 12 Years After

News Trending

Twelve years after the tragic abduction of schoolgirls from Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State, parents of the victims have renewed their appeal to the Nigerian government and the international community to intensify efforts to rescue the remaining girls still in captivity.

The mass kidnapping, which occurred on April 14, 2014, during an attack by the extremist group Boko Haram, shocked the world and sparked global outrage under the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. While some of the abducted girls have since been rescued or released through negotiations over the years, at least 87 are still unaccounted for.

Speaking during a remembrance gathering to mark the anniversary, distraught parents expressed deep frustration and pain over the prolonged absence of their daughters. Many said they feel abandoned and fear that efforts to secure the girls’ freedom have dwindled over time.

“We are still waiting. We have not given up hope, but the government must not forget our children,” one of the parents said, urging authorities to act with renewed urgency.

The parents also called on the United Nations and other international organizations to step in and support Nigeria in locating and rescuing the remaining captives. They stressed that the continued captivity of the girls remains a painful reminder of the country’s ongoing security challenges.

Advocacy groups have echoed these concerns, warning against fading public attention and calling for sustained pressure on authorities to ensure that all the girls are brought home safely.

Despite repeated assurances from successive administrations, many families say progress has been too slow, leaving them in a state of uncertainty and grief for over a decade.

As the anniversary is marked, the parents say their demand remains unchanged: that every missing girl be found and reunited with her family, no matter how long it takes.
