Armed bandits have invaded the Baga community in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, killing at least five villagers and abducting around 150 others in a ruthless raid that also saw several houses set ablaze.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, April 7, 2026 (around 6:30 a.m. according to police reports), with heavily armed gunmen storming Baga village and nearby areas, including Erena and other communities in Erena Ward such as Lanta and Tunga. Sources indicate the bandits, numbering in the dozens, entered from neighbouring areas and used sophisticated weapons to sow terror.
During the assault, the attackers torched multiple houses, sending thick plumes of smoke across the affected communities. Panicking residents fled into the surrounding bush, but many were pursued: some were shot dead, while others—reportedly including many women and children—were rounded up and taken captive. Local vigilantes and residents who tried to resist sustained gunshot injuries and were rushed to hospital for treatment. Some reports mention additional injuries among villagers.
The confirmed death toll stands at five villagers in initial accounts, though varying figures (including three in some reports) have emerged pending full verification. The abduction figure of approximately 150 has been widely reported, though police statements have sometimes described it as “scores” or left the exact number pending further assessment. Many residents abandoned their belongings and fled to safer nearby areas like Erena town amid the chaos.
Shiroro Local Government Chairman and local sources confirmed the invasion, killings, and injuries, noting that authorities were attending to the wounded at hospitals. The Niger State Police Command acknowledged the attack on Bagna (also referred to as Baga) and the subsequent movement toward Erena. Joint security forces were quickly mobilised, engaged the bandits in a firefight, and forced them to retreat from the immediate area. Security personnel have since been deployed to the scene to restore order, pursue the fleeing attackers, and work toward rescuing the abducted victims.
This latest incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Niger State and the broader north-central region, where bandit groups continue to carry out raids involving killings, mass abductions for ransom, arson, and displacement. No immediate updates on rescues or arrests were available as security operations remain active.
The community is tense, with significant displacement reported and fears of further attacks persisting. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while intensifying efforts to secure the area and bring the perpetrators to justice.
