Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State – Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have successfully raided a secret cult gathering, arresting five suspected members of the Eiye Confraternity in Akungba-Akoko.
According to a statement from the command, the raid was conducted following credible intelligence that a group of young men were holding a clandestine meeting at a location within the Akungba-Akoko area. The suspects were apprehended during the operation without any exchange of gunfire.
The arrested individuals are suspected members of the Supreme Eiye Confraternity, a group known for cult-related activities in parts of Ondo State, particularly around tertiary institutions and surrounding communities. Police sources indicate that the gathering was allegedly linked to cult initiation or planning sessions that have contributed to insecurity in the Akoko region.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects have been involved in activities terrorising residents of Akungba-Akoko and its environs. Items believed to be connected to cult operations, such as weapons, cult regalia, or other incriminating materials, were reportedly recovered during the raid, though specific details of recoveries are still being withheld pending full investigation.
The Ondo State Police Command, under its leadership, has intensified efforts to curb cultism, especially among youths in educational institutions like Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA) and surrounding areas. This operation forms part of a broader crackdown on secret cults to restore peace and security in the state.
The five suspects are currently in police custody. They will be paraded before the public soon and subsequently arraigned in court after the completion of investigations. The command has also launched a manhunt for other fleeing members of the group who escaped during the raid.
Residents of Akungba-Akoko have welcomed the development, with many calling for sustained police presence to prevent reprisal attacks or further cult violence in the community.
