Former Kaduna State Governor, , has remained in the custody of the (EFCC) as investigators continue to question him over an alleged ₦432 billion corruption case.

Sources familiar with the investigation said the anti-graft agency secured an extension of his detention to allow more time to review documents and interrogate key aspects of the financial transactions under scrutiny. Officials reportedly believe the additional time is necessary to conclude ongoing forensic analysis linked to the probe.

El-Rufai’s legal team has, however, challenged the continued detention, describing it as excessive. His lawyer is said to be actively pushing for his release on bail, arguing that the former governor has cooperated with investigators and poses no flight risk. The defence also maintains that due process must be followed and that prolonged custody without formal charges violates his rights.

EFCC officials have not released a detailed public statement on the matter but insist the investigation is ongoing and being handled in accordance with the law. The case has drawn nationwide attention due to the size of the alleged funds involved and El-Rufai’s high political profile.

Observers say the coming days will be crucial, as the agency decides whether to file formal charges or grant administrative bail while investigations continue. For now, the former governor remains in custody as both sides prepare for the next legal steps.
