Nigerian troops have recorded a major breakthrough in the ongoing counter-terrorism war after storming several torture camps operated by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Borno and Yobe states, neutralising no fewer than 32 terrorists.
The coordinated military operation, carried out by troops of Operation Hadin Kai with support from other security units, targeted identified ISWAP enclaves where kidnapped civilians were reportedly being held and abused by the terrorists.
According to military sources, the troops engaged the terrorists in fierce gun battles before overwhelming them and overrunning the camps. The operation led to the killing of 32 ISWAP fighters, while several others were forced to flee into surrounding bushes with gunshot wounds.
In the course of the raid, over 70 captives being held in the camps managed to escape amid the chaos. Many of the victims were said to have been subjected to severe torture and inhumane treatment by the terrorists before the military intervention.
Weapons, ammunition, motorcycles and other logistics believed to belong to ISWAP were also recovered and subsequently destroyed to prevent reuse by fleeing insurgents.
The military has assured that efforts are ongoing to track down surviving terrorists and ensure the rescued captives receive medical care and psychological support before being reunited with their families.
The successful operation is seen as a significant boost to Nigeriaโs counter-insurgency efforts in the North-East, as security forces intensify pressure on terrorist groups operating across the region.
