Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 elections Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark, and ex–All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman Chief John Odigie-Oyegun have cautioned that Nigeria must not slide into a one-party state, warning that such a development would endanger democracy and national stability.
The leaders gave the warning while speaking at a consultative meeting of opposition figures and political stakeholders in Abuja on Monday. They expressed concern over what they described as growing intolerance for dissent, shrinking democratic space, and the weakening of opposition parties ahead of future elections.
Atiku said democracy thrives on competition, accountability, and strong institutions, stressing that a dominant-party system would undermine citizens’ voices and erode democratic checks and balances. He noted that Nigeria’s diversity requires inclusive governance and a political environment where multiple views can coexist freely.
Peter Obi echoed the sentiment, stating that Nigeria’s progress depends on credible opposition and issue-based politics. According to him, a one-party state—whether by coercion, inducement, or institutional capture—would worsen governance challenges and alienate millions of Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship.
David Mark warned that history shows one-party dominance often leads to authoritarianism, corruption, and abuse of power. He urged political actors to put national interest above party loyalty and to protect democratic norms built since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
Similarly, Oyegun stressed the need to strengthen democratic institutions, respect the rule of law, and guarantee free and fair elections. He called on civil society, the media, and the electorate to remain vigilant and resist any attempt to stifle opposition or monopolize political power.
The leaders jointly called for reforms to ensure electoral transparency, internal party democracy, and equal opportunities for all political parties. They also appealed to Nigerians to actively participate in the democratic process and hold leaders accountable.
Their remarks come amid ongoing debates about defections, political realignments, and concerns over the balance of power in Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next general elections.
