The United Nations has reacted to the escalating crisis in the Benin Republic after a military coup reportedly unfolded in the wake of alleged Nigerian airstrikes near the border region.
According to emerging reports, tensions spiked after a faction of Benin’s armed forces overpowered the presidential guard and announced a takeover of government institutions. The development came hours after Nigerian airstrikes targeted suspected criminal hideouts close to the Nigeria–Benin border—an operation that has since generated regional concern and controversy.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the UN called for calm and urged all parties involved to exercise restraint to prevent further destabilization in West Africa. The global body condemned any unconstitutional change of government, stressing the need for dialogue and adherence to democratic processes.
The UN also expressed worry over the humanitarian implications, warning that continued unrest could trigger displacement and worsen insecurity across the region. It called on neighboring countries, ECOWAS, and international partners to work together to restore stability and ensure the protection of civilians.
