Lagos, Nigeria – A woman has been apprehended in Lagos for allegedly mixing harmful coloring agents with spoiled yam flour to produce contaminated “Elubo Isu” (yam flour) for sale to unsuspecting consumers. The arrest was announced by the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, on Friday, July 25, 2025.
Commissioner Wahab stated that the arrest followed credible intelligence received from the Chairman of the Elubo Sellers Association regarding dangerous food adulteration practices within the market.
The report indicated that some unscrupulous traders were mixing harmful coloring agents with spoiled yam flour to produce contaminated ‘Elubo Isu’ for unsuspecting consumers,” Wahab wrote.
The Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) enforcement team promptly raided the location, leading to the arrest of Mrs. Kehinde Raji, who was reportedly caught in the act. Commissioner Wahab commended the market leadership for bringing this critical public health issue to the attention of authorities.
Preliminary reports indicate that several consumers have already experienced health complications after consuming the adulterated product. Mrs. Raji will face prosecution under the relevant laws of the Lagos State government.
