Dave Portnoy, the well-known founder of Barstool Sports, recently made waves during an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s “Club Shay Shay” podcast by disclosing that his former wife still has access to his bank account.
Portnoy explained his decision by highlighting the deep trust he has for his ex-wife.
He recounted their early struggles, saying, “She was there when we couldn’t afford a hamburger… when we were living at the in-laws’ house,” emphasizing her unwavering support during the initial, lean years of his career. He further elaborated on his perspective, stating, “To me, just like we kind of separated when we started making it, so she doesn’t get to enjoy any of that. That’s not right.”
Despite their separation, Portnoy stressed the strong bond they continue to share, even referring to her as his best friend. “If she called me right now and said ‘I need you,’ I’d be there,” he affirmed.
A visibly surprised Shannon Sharpe inquired if Portnoy would be comfortable with his ex-wife using his money for significant expenses, such as an extravagant wedding. Portnoy’s response was a definitive, “Yes. 100%.”
In essence, while their marriage ended, Portnoy made it clear that loyalty remains a cornerstone of their enduring relationship.
