The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a man identified as Igoin Peter for allegedly impersonating a presidential aide and defrauding victims of N25 million through a fake cryptocurrency licensing scheme.
According to reports, Peter allegedly presented himself as a high-ranking government official and promised to facilitate access to a cryptocurrency operating license for unsuspecting victims. He reportedly convinced individuals that he had the authority and connections needed to secure official approvals.
Investigators said the suspect allegedly collected the sum of N25 million under false pretenses, claiming the funds were required to process and obtain the supposed license. However, the promises were said to be fraudulent and no legitimate approval process existed.
The EFCC brought the suspect before the court on charges related to fraud and impersonation. He is expected to face legal proceedings as authorities continue investigations into the matter.
The anti-graft agency reaffirmed its commitment to cracking down on financial crimes and warned members of the public to verify claims and credentials before engaging in financial transactions.
