A 14-year-old Nigerian boy named Eghosa Ogbebor was shot dead in a broad daylight incident on Lord Warwick Street in Woolwich, south-east London, on Thursday, 2 April 2026.
Police responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 3:40pm. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Eghosa was pronounced dead at the scene. His next-of-kin have been informed and are receiving support from specialist officers.
Metropolitan Police have arrested three suspects on suspicion of murder: two boys aged 14 and 16, and an 18-year-old man. All three remain in custody as investigations continue.
Detective Chief Inspector Lucie Card, leading the investigation, said:
“Our thoughts remain with Eghosa’s family and loved ones, they are being supported by specially trained officers and have asked for privacy at this difficult time.
“I know the concern this has caused within Woolwich and the wider community, particularly considering Eghosa’s young age. We have an increased police presence around the area.
“While we have made three arrests, our investigation continues and I would urge anyone with any information to come forward and speak to officers.”
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. Locals reported hearing a loud bang outside The Greyhound pub. Some accounts mention a group of around 15 youths, some reportedly armed with machetes, in the area shortly before or during the incident. One resident claimed it appeared to be a “planned” or “targeted attack,” with suspects possibly having been in the area in the days leading up to it. A police tent was set up near the scene, and armed officers were seen making arrests nearby, including at a local shop.
Forensic teams, including officers in protective suits, conducted searches in the area, with reports of sniffer dogs and cordons in place. Some unconfirmed local reports suggested the weapon may have been discarded in the nearby Thames.
The incident has shocked the local community, coming in an area that has seen previous youth violence, including a fatal stabbing on a bus nearby in 2025.
