Popular skitmaker and content creator, ZicSaloma, has ignited widespread discussion on social media following a frank video he shared on Instagram, where he urged Nigerians to adopt what he described as being “financially heartless” in order to break free from poverty.
Clarifying his stance, ZicSaloma stressed that his message was not about being cruel, selfish, or abandoning family responsibilities. Rather, he said it was about survival, boundaries, and long-term financial planning in a society where extended family members often feel entitled to one person’s earnings.
He revealed that several of his earlier business ventures collapsed, not due to poor financial habits, but because his savings were constantly drained by family demands once they became aware he had money. From rent payments to unexpected emergencies, his financial goals were repeatedly derailed.
According to him, in many African households, once your income becomes known, it is automatically treated as communal property. Some relatives, he noted, may even stop making personal efforts, relying instead on constant “assistance.” This mindset, he argued, traps families in a never-ending cycle of poverty.
ZicSaloma advised people to keep their actual earnings private and, when necessary, deliberately downplay their income—except in genuine life-or-death situations. He explained that building wealth often requires saying no, resisting emotional pressure, and accepting that not everyone will be pleased with your choices.
He also cautioned against routinely giving money to friends, warning that such generosity can breed dependency rather than appreciation. In his view, continuous financial support does not guarantee gratitude, as people may still feel entitled or even resentful despite being helped.
