The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a couple for allegedly staging their own abduction in a bid to extort ₦10 million from their family.
According to police sources, the couple hatched the plan after the husband expressed the need to raise money to fund a planned trip abroad. Investigations revealed that the pair conspired to fake a kidnapping scenario, sending distress messages and making ransom demands to unsuspecting relatives.
Family members, alarmed by the reported abduction, reportedly mobilised funds and paid the ₦10 million ransom in an attempt to secure the couple’s release. However, suspicious circumstances surrounding the incident prompted a complaint to the police.
Operatives swung into action and traced the alleged kidnappers, only to discover that the supposed victims were behind the crime themselves. The couple was subsequently arrested in possession of the ransom money.
Police authorities confirmed that the suspects have confessed to staging the self-kidnap and will be charged to court after the conclusion of investigations. The command also warned members of the public against engaging in criminal schemes, stressing that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law.
